What we did ?

The Regional Arcause Spotlight: Varanasi Edition brought together 18 enthusiastic participants under the theme Beyond Monuments: Exploring the Living Heritage of Kashi for an immersive exploration of the city’s historic galis, architecture, crafts, communities, and everyday urban life. Accompanied by two facilitators from Vasistha Foundation, the walk encouraged participants to look beyond monumental heritage and understand how Kashi’s identity is shaped by its living traditions and people. The experience began with a visit to a centuries-old ashram, where participants explored its architectural character, historical significance, and enduring cultural role, followed by visits to other sites that revealed the city’s layered history. A key highlight was a visit to a GI-tagged wooden toy workshop, where participants observed traditional toy-making and interacted with local artisans, gaining insights into the craftsmanship, cultural significance, and livelihoods connected to the art form. As the group navigated the historic galis of Kashi, conversations and observations revealed the intricate relationship between architecture, public spaces, commerce, and community life. The walk concluded with a facilitated discussion, encouraging participants to reflect on their observations and see Kashi as a living heritage city—where heritage is shaped not only by monuments, but also by its people, traditions, and everyday practices.
