Introduction

Architecture does not end when a building is completed. It continues in documentation, discourse, critique, translation, and public engagement.

The Arcause Writers Collective (AWC) is an initiative under the Ethos Foundation that seeks to build a sustained culture of architectural writing rooted in research, responsibility, and real-world narratives.

In an era where architecture is often reduced to imagery and surface-level appreciation, the Writers Collective attempts to re-centre writing as a critical tool, one that documents labour, material realities, sustainability, regional knowledge systems, accessibility, and the lived experiences embedded within built environments.

Why a Writers Collective?

Architectural education trains students to draw, design, and build. But rarely does it train them to:

  • Document processes with rigour
  • Write critically about practice
  • Translate complex design ideas for diverse audiences
  • Engage with editorial systems
  • Pitch work to publications
  • Understand the difference between writing for print and digital platforms
  • Adapt content for regional and vernacular readerships

The Arcause Writers Collective creates a structured space where students, young faculty, alumni, and practitioners can learn to write architecture, as inquiry.

Who Should Participate?

Each participating institution is encouraged to nominate:

  • Students
  • Faculty Members (young and early-career faculty strongly encouraged)
  • Alumnus/Alumna

By bringing together learners, educators, and practitioners, the Writers Collective creates a dynamic exchange that extends beyond campus boundaries.

Mentors

Arup Ghosh

Arup Ghosh began his career as a journalist and then spent 28 years in ITC’s Corporate Communications department working across all verticals – media, content, digital and events. He has been visiting faculty at IIM Shillong, Symbiosis, Pune, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and St Xavier’s College, Kolkata.

Subhro Saha

Subhro Saha has always wanted to connect with people and share their stories. He chose his vehicle to make that connect pretty early in life – that of a journalist. In his 26-year stint in mainstream print media including The Telegraph, The Statesman, Business Standard and The Asian Age, he consistently broke some of the most significant stories in the domains of real estate, retail, public health issues, new research in medicine and infrastructure in Kolkata and East India, besides tracking game-changing trends in these areas. At present, he is a freelance content writer and writes blogs and business-development content every month for various corporate clients across diverse domains.

The Bengaluru Edition
