Inclusion
Project Inclusion under ShramA is dedicated to fostering a more inclusive construction industry by bridging the gap between construction workers and the larger architectural community. This project seeks to amplify workers’ voices, ensuring their stories, challenges, and contributions are acknowledged and respected. Through ethnographic research and direct engagement, Project Inclusion aims to build empathy and understanding, paving the way for more equitable practices in the industry.
The pilot project was conducted in the cities of Mumbai and Pune, with architecture colleges partnering with us to help collect data from the field to build an understanding of the conditions at the grassroots. This year we are expanding to more cities across Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
The larger objective is to take ShramA and the conversations around it to every state in the country and build empathy among the building and construction community, to nudge social growth for all stakeholders, the hands that build, being one of the primary ones.

Understanding the Hands That Build
Analysis from the interviews
The detailed study of Project Inclusion revealed significant gender disparities and a lack of support systems and their awareness within India’s construction industry. Many workers, especially women, face financial difficulties, low wages, and limited awareness of savings, insurance options, and labor rights. The hierarchical nature of the industry often restricts workers’ decision-making power and access to support during emergencies. Addressing these challenges through gender equality, comprehensive support, education, and training is essential to foster inclusivity, empower workers, and drive sustainable growth in the sector.

What the fellows say
“ It was truly eye-opening to hear about their lives, challenges, and aspirations. These conversations allowed me to develop a profound understanding of the issues they face and the impact your organization has in making a difference.
Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this incredible journey. ”
Zaman Khan, TSAP
“It is important for us to understand who we are working for. Just like that it is more important to understand who is working for us, on our sites- our construction workers. Learned a lot through the ShramA fellowship.”
