Compression Only Life Support (COLS)

What is COLS Protocol?

Overview

The Compression-Only Life Support (COLS) protocol by the Indian Resuscitation Council Federation (IRCF), differs from traditional CPR in that it emphasizes chest compressions without rescue breaths.
While CPR combines chest compressions with rescue breaths, COLS focuses solely on maintaining blood circulation through continuous chest compressions.
COLS is designed to simplify the process for bystanders, making it easier for non-medical personnel to intervene quickly during sudden cardiac arrest. This approach is particularly useful in communities where awareness and training in full CPR are limited, making it more accessible and potentially increasing bystander intervention rates.

ReBeat workshops are currently based on the COLS protocol of the IRCF.

The COLS Protocol Algorithm:

CPR helps by keeping oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and heart, which can prevent brain damage and improve the chances of survival until emergency services arrive. Early CPR, especially when combined with the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), significantly increases the likelihood of survival after cardiac arrest.
